Topic/Skill: Speaking – Rapid Fire
(Advanced)
Teacher
Presentation:
The teacher reviewed the homework project from the previous class, which is
still due. Then, he introduced the “Rapid Fire” speaking activity (a fast-paced
exercise where the teacher asks quick questions and students answer
immediately). Afterward, he presented 10–11 questions on different
crime-related topics. The discussion topics ranged from the death penalty and
gun control to taxes in the U.S.
Classroom
Management:
The teacher organized the class into time for working on speech presentation
outlines and time for answering and discussing the list of questions.
Student
Participation:
The teacher asked each student a question from the list. Students responded by
comparing the topic to their own countries. Other students also joined in,
adding comments or responses to their classmates’ answers.
Feedback
Provided:
The teacher listened carefully to student responses and gave feedback. At
times, he provided clarification, offered help with wording, or looked up facts
on Google to share with the class.
Lessons
Learned (for teaching):
I learned strategies to motivate students to participate in conversations.
Choosing interesting and relevant topics helps them engage and make comparisons
with the host country. I also learned how to guide students in outlining their
thoughts and ideas to prepare for a speech presentation.
