Topic/Skill: Speaking & Looking at Duolingo Test

For the second meeting with Seunghye, we started by going over the recording I took last class. At first she was a little shy to listen to the recording, but it did help her see some of her "mistakes". By looking over this, we both found out that most of her errors come from pressure or being put on the spot. This transitioned well from what she brought up at the beginning of the lesson: the duolingo test. I was unaware of this test, but she described how it is very similar to the TOEFL test... and how she needs it to get into a doctorate program for music school. She showed me the practice she has done with the test, study-guides and etc. Then we did a practice of describing a picture. At first she had trouble with the picture, so we stopped for a moment and I asked her to describe her surroundings: the park bench, the library, the tree above us, and the street light down the street. We then redid the picture. The picture exercise was a timed one. I quickly realized that it was this pressure that was causing her errors. She knew the natural-sounding phrases, the grammar, the pronunciation, but when there was a timer... it was a lot harder to remember those. So, during this lesson I taught her how to feel more relaxed when speaking English by letting her free speak again. We did a picture description for a final time, but without a timer. During this 1 hour lesson I also brought with me a list of slang words and natural phrases. I also brought out a list of words surrounding the object of a tree (I.e. branch, root, leaves), and I showed her and made her read aloud the story The Giving Tree.

 Date/Time: September 2nd  Topic/ Skill: Grammar--Future Continuous Tense  Teacher Presentation: The teacher modeled how to use the future continuous tense in everyday language while also providing easy ways on how to remember when to use it.  Classroom Management: The teacher timed each section of the lesson very well, broke it up into parts. Parts included: teaching, examples, discussion, activity, review.  Material: Powerpoint and Textbook Student Participation: Everyone gave their own example during the discussion and activity points of the lecture.  Feedback Provided: The teacher would listen to the example sentences given by the students and would correct the vocabulary or grammar tense errors.
