Date/Time: September 22nd (1hr) Location: Kellogg Building  Topic/Skill: Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: We went over some causal English conversations as she said she wanted to practice sounding less formal when talking to new people. This was because she is a small business owner and wants to be able to converse with her customers as best as possible. I gave her some feedback on common phrases she may hear and how she can respond to them more causally.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: What  I  learned from this lesson was how hard it is for non-native speakers to differentiate between formal and casual speak. So by giving them example conversations and phrases they can use can really helo facilitate their conversations and help build their vocabulary.

Date/Time: September 19th (2hrs) Location: Kellogg Building  Topic/Skill: Grammar + Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: We went over her grammar quiz that was on gerunds and infinitives. As we went over the quiz I provided her with feedback on what she could do to avoid making the same mistakes in the future. By giving her these quick tips we were able to identify what areas were giving her the most trouble when it came to this specific grammar lesson. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: What I learned from the lesson, was the importance of not only error correction but also the importance of reinforcement. By reinforcing how these grammar topics are properly used with the use of error corrections and examples I saw her slowly improve.

Date/Time:  Thursday, 9/4/2025, 11:00am-11:50am  Topic/Skill:  Reading  Teacher Presentation: The teacher led a reading-focused session where students took turns reading aloud from a shared text. The emphasis was on fluency and general comprehension rather than detailed correction. The teacher allowed the reading to flow and did not correct every student mistake. However, if a student asked specifically about their pronunciation, the teacher provided feedback and modeled the correct form. This created a relaxed atmosphere where students felt comfortable speaking. Classroom Management: The class was well-structured, with the teacher managing participation effectively. Students were called on to read in turn, and the teacher maintained a calm pace. A few students demonstrated strong speaking skills, while others had more difficulty with annunciation and pronunciation. Despite this, the teacher balanced encouraging participation with occasional individualized fee...

Date/Time:  Tuesday, 9/11/2025, 1:30pm-2:30pm Location:  Dirac Library  Topic/Skill:  First Meeting / Informal Speaking & Listening Assessment   This was my first meeting with Wei. We spent the session in casual conversation as a way to get to know each other and assess her current English level. I asked about her background, daily routines, and reasons for studying English. Wei was thoughtful in her responses and asked clarifying questions when needed, which helped me begin to understand her comfort level with both speaking and comprehension. Wei can speak English fairly well and I had zero difficulty understanding her. I would like to focus on her delivery and speaking skills.

Date/Time:  Wednesday, 9/10/2025, 3:30pm-4:30pm Location:  Dirac Library Topic/Skill:  First Meeting / Informal Speaking & Listening Assessment This was my first meeting with Catalina. We spent the session getting to know each other through informal conversation. I asked her questions about her background, interests, and goals for learning English. This allowed me to begin assessing her speaking and listening level. Catalina was responsive and engaged, however, she can improve her accuracy. Catalina mentioned her interest in movies, videos, and restaurants, and wrote down several things to look up later. I used this time to  build rapport and establish a comfortable learning environment. I guided the conversation with open-ended questions, allowing Catalina to speak freely and demonstrate her current English ability. I gave light corrections as needed and made mental notes on her strengths and areas for growth.

Date/Time: Friday, 9/12/2025, 09:00–10:50 a.m. Topic/Skill: Composition and writing / Beginners Teacher Presentation: The teacher presented the agenda and plan for the day. He reviewed the writing method, focusing on planning how to write essays and short paragraphs. He explained journal-style writing and then asked the students to write about themselves. Classroom Management: The teacher structured the lesson by timing each activity. First, students reviewed the homework essay from the last class and had time to go over the feedback and make corrections. Then, the teacher gave 30 minutes for students to write an essay in class. The subject was: What things do you do regularly to be healthy? The teacher instructed students to write the essay independently, without any help. He explained the requirements for the essay, specifying that it should have an introduction, body, and conclusion paragraph. He also outlined the steps for writing the essay: creating an outline, writing ...

Date/Time: September 12th (2hrs) Location: Kellogg Building  Topic/Skill: Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: I went over how to identify when to use a gerrand and went through multiple examples of this. From there we went over her in class assignments and I clarified any questions she had about that. After this we spent the rest of the session going through examples sentences and practiced using them in everyday speech/ conversations. While I error corrected when needed.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that by giving many examples that she can relate to it made it easier for her to understand the patterns in speech, and therefore, made it easier for her to use the correct words in sentences.

Date/Time: September 10th  Location: Kellogg Building  Topic/Skill: Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: I asked him questions about his week and how his classes have been going since our last session. I continued providing corrections to his grammar in use and asked him more casual questions about his weekend plans and even future travel. Focusing on him using the proper tenses in his speech. I let him choose the topics for our next meeting to help him stay engaged.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that along with not having a full vocabulary his confidence in speaking English needs to be worked on. Because of this I made sure to acknowlege not only the mistakes being made but also the times where he was using the the correct words and tenses in context. I felt that by the end of the session he felt more eager to learn and comfortable making mistakes and correcting himself.

Date/Time: September 9th Topic/ Skill: Speaking- Giving a research presentation.  Teacher Presentation: During this specific class the teacher did not model nor present anything as this was done in earlier classes. This class period specifically focused on each student giving their presentation and him listening and writing down notes on their presentation skills and speaking.  Classroom Management: The teacher timed each presentation, giving each person the same amount of time to explain their research. At the end of all the presentations he made all his notes available so once their final presentation comes around they are able to improve upon this one.  Material: Powerpoint  Student Participation: Everyone gave their own presentation, following a similar structure to what i assume was the sample provided by the professor in an earlier class.  Feedback Provided: The teacher would listen to the presentations and on his computer would know any speaking, g...

Date/Time: September 5th Location: Kellogg Building  Topic/Skill: Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: My tutee wanted to focus more on grammar in use, as she feels like she knows the rules but when it comes to actually using them in her day to day conversations she has a hard time. From here I started asking her some basic questions to get her talking a little bit about herself in English so I could asses some of the mistakes she could be making. We practiced correcting these errors and went over speaking in the past and future tense as these were the areas she struggled with the most. I suggested that she could try going over some simple past and future sentences that are commonly used so she can easily recognize them, as well as listen to some podcast and hear how the two people speak to one another. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Something I learned about tutoring is that by repeating back to them the sentence they just spoke with the cor...

Date/Time: Wednesday 9/3/2025, 7:00-8:45 pm Location: Starbucks Coffee Shop Topic/Skill: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing I prepared a worksheet to check his English level, which included speaking, vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing. He is a low-level beginner who can read and understand simple sentences. When he cannot say a word or sentence, he uses Google Translate, and I asked him to read the translated English back to me. I also looked up English synonyms for words he did not understand. I encouraged him to check words on Google first before using the translator. At the end, I asked if he had any comments or questions and told him I would email him some worksheets. I need to create a beginner plan for grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing using practice worksheets.

Date/Time: September 3rd  Location: Kellogg Building  Topic/Skill: Speaking  Feedback provided to the tutee: I asked him questions about his day to day life and asked him to respond back to me in English to the best of his ability. In doing so I was able to stop and correct any grammatical or even vocabulary errors/questions he might have had during our conversation. In the end I left him with some sentences and words that he can review and practice using in his English conversations before our next session.  Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that his main struggle comes from not having the full vocabulary to say exactly what he wants to say, however, i was very impressed for the most part as I could understand what he meant to say and only needed minor corrections that can be worked on more in future sessions.

Date/Time: September 2nd  Topic/ Skill: Grammar--Future Continuous Tense  Teacher Presentation: The teacher modeled how to use the future continuous tense in everyday language while also providing easy ways on how to remember when to use it.  Classroom Management: The teacher timed each section of the lesson very well, broke it up into parts. Parts included: teaching, examples, discussion, activity, review.  Material: Powerpoint and Textbook Student Participation: Everyone gave their own example during the discussion and activity points of the lecture.  Feedback Provided: The teacher would listen to the example sentences given by the students and would correct the vocabulary or grammar tense errors. Additionally, he applauded those who made good efforts and had correct usage of the verb tense. Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: I learned how to get students actively contributing to the conversation by splitting one large activity between each student ...
